Test summary

Prepared samples are tested by peeling apart the release backing from the coated face material (or vice versa), at an angle of 180°. The average peeling force is calculated, and reported as centinewtons per 50 mm width of sample

Test apparatus

Test plates made of float glass or metal, and means of loading to achieve a pressure of 6.89 kPs

Tensile tester with grips and suitable range loadcell

Double sided adhesive tape

Cutting apparatus

Cleaning materials and solvents

Preparation

Cut strips from a representative sample 50 mm x 175 mm in the machine direction. Prepare at least three strips from each sample.

Place the strips between two flat metal or glass plates and keep for 20 hours at 23° C under a pressure of 6.86 kPs to ensure good contact between the release material and the adhesive. Remove from between the plates, and keep for not less than 4 hours at 23° C, 50% RH

Test method

Representative samples are conditioned by being compressed between glass or metal plates at a specified pressure. After further conditioning, the strip is adhered to a test plate with double-sided tape. The facing material may be peeled from the release substrate, or vice versa. The laminate is peeled apart at an angle of 180° with a jaw separation speed of 300 mm per minute. The average force is recorded from the centre section of the test strip from at least 5 readings at 10 mm intervals.

Fix each strip to the test plate with double-sided tape

The facing material can be peeled from the release substrate, or vice versa

Peel the laminate apart at an angle of 180° with a separation speed of 300 mm per minute

Measure the load in at least 5 positions at 10 mm intervals from the centre section of the test strip, calculate the average load for these 5 readings

Calculate the Low speed release force as expressed as the average load for the test strips in centinewtons per 50 mm width of sample

Report

Sample and batch number if appropriate.

Low speed release force

Whether the adhesive material is separated from its backing sheet, or the backing sheet from the adhesive coated material.
