Solution

  • Motorised compression test stand
  • Digital force gauge
  • Coin support fixture and compression probe

Benefits

  • Quick and easy test procedure
  • High load measurement in a small-footprint test system

Requirement

The Spanish producer needed to find out the force to extract the inner filler of the 1 and 2 Euro coin from their outer ring. The inner filler is a sandwich of copper alloy and nickel, which is stamped and compressed into the outer ring during the assembly process. The test was to determine whether the coins are capable of remaining assembled in normal usage and can withstand a destructive push-out force of at least 1800 N.

Solution

As this test would be done on a multitude of samples, a 2500nbsp;N VersaTest motorised test stand was supplied with an AFG 2500nbsp;N force gauge. The accessories developed by the customer had 2 main parts, the compression rod and the coin plate-holder.

The compression rod is fixed directly onto the loadcell of the AFG force gauge. The plate holder (cylinder form) maintains the euro coin in the vertical axis directly below the compression rod to ensure optimum precision.

The compression rod applies a force at slow speed to the inner part of the coin, which falls through the cylinder and slides out of the plate holder. Typical push-out forces were between 1600 N - 2000 N.

For loadcell protection, the stand reverse cable, between the AFG and the VersaTest was used to return the crosshead to its original position if the force ever reached the maximum limit set by the alarm point of the AFG.

Test equipment

  • VersaTest motorised test stand (superseded by the MultiTest-dV series)
  • AFG 2500 N Force Gauge
  • Interface Cable
  • Compression Rod and Cylinder Plate Holder Fixture
