90 degree peel | Mecmesin

Both the 90-degree and 180-degree peel tests are typically used where a flexible material is bonded to a more rigid substrate. You would use the 90-degree test over the 180-degree test if your flexible substrate cannot easily be bent back to 180 degrees without damaging the specimen. The 90-degree peel test requires a sliding table or peel wheel fixture to ensure the peel angle remains constant. The test specimen is clamped on an assisted peel table. A small section of the specimen is separated at one end and held in the upper vice grip, which is attached to the moving crosshead of the test stand. The assisted table is attached to the crosshead using a pulley and thread mechanism, such that the lateral movement of the table is at the same rate as the vertical movement of the crosshead, thus maintaining a constant 90-degree angle between the two pieces. As the crosshead moves upwards it peels apart the materials at a constant speed, as defined by the test standards.

The 90-degree peel test tends to provide higher values than a T-peel test but lower values than a 180-degree peel test.
