Test summary

This standard gives instructions for the testing the force required to open type IIA child-resistant closures by stripping the lugs without applying any downforce. This can be used to evaluate the continued effectiveness of the closure for child-resistance and adult opening and reclosing throughout the expected use and shelf life of the package.

Test apparatus

Torque testing equipment

Humidity/temperature controlled chamber if required

Optional mechanical cap gripping aid

Test method

1. Select sufficient new containers and closures for the test to be statistically significant. If required these can be pre-conditioned by storage in atmospheric conditions given in the standard.

2. Fit the closure to the container, applying downward force to reduce or eliminate closure lug wear.

3. Grip the closed container in the torque measuring device, and apply opening torque being careful not to exert any downward force.

4. Record the maximum torque

5. Report all details necessary to identify the containers and closures. Report the average torque, the range and standard deviation.
