Compressive shear is very similar to lap shear and is widely used for wood bonding. It is suitable where the substrates are unlikely to deform under pressure and all the shear force is transmitted along the place of adhesion. If this is not the case, then breakdown of the bonded layers becomes complex. Single and double compressive shear is along the same principles as for lap shear (tensile), where force applied to break a bond is proportional to the surface area of the bond.

Compressive shear test standards

A very wide range of compressive shear standards have been developed by international and trade organisation. Commonly used test standards include:
