Torque Testing
Torque testing is a way of determining how something will react when it is being turned during operation or twisted to failure - when a force is applied to it in torque. Torque is a turning force, measured in units of force multiplied by unit length. 10N.m, for example, indicates a force of 1kg acting at 1 metre away from the centre of rotation. The imperial equivalent of this would be 0.738lbf.ft (pound-feet).
A torque test may be performed to assess the connection of two components, e.g. nuts, bolts & other fasteners; the correct operation of an assembly, e.g. catheters, rotational switches, scopes etc., or the integrity and strength of container closures. Plus countless other rotational components and devices.
A common product torque test is a closure torque test.
Benefits of Torque Testing
These include:
- Ensuring the proper functioning of components
- Ensuring the integrity and safety of products
- Reducing material costs and achieving lean manufacturing goals
- Compliance with industry standards
Standards
A number of standards for torque testing have been developed. For example:
- ASTM D1478-07 Standard Test Method for Low-Temperature Torque of Ball Bearing Grease
- ASTM D3198 Test Method for Application and Removal Torque of Threaded or Lug-Style Closures
- ASTM D3472 Test Method for Reverse-Ratchet Torque of Type IA Child-Resistant Closures
- ASTM D3810 Standard Test Method for Minimum Application Torque of Type IA Child-Resistant Closures
- ASTM F2213-06 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Magnetically Induced Torque on Medical Devices in the Magnetic Resonance Environment
- ASTM WK15535 Rotational Capacity Testing of Plain or Coated Bolt, Nut and Washer Assemblies
- BS EN 1707:1997 Conical Fittings with a 6 % (Luer) Taper for Syringes, Needles and Certain Other Medical Equipment. Lock Fittings
- BS EN 20594-1 Conical Fittings with a 6 % (Luer) Taper for Syringes, Needles and Certain Other Medical Equipment. – General Requirements
- ISO 594-2 Conical Fittings with a 6 % (Luer) Taper for Syringes, Needles and Certain Other Medical Equipment. – Part 2: Lock Fittings
